about

Walk-in Diorama

A mini-album of glimpsed melodic vignettes. This release began life with a cluster of music intended for my previous album Scale. However because I wanted to release Scale on vinyl (and it had already overrun the vinyl limit of 21 minutes per side), I ended up with a “3rd side” of music I couldn’t use.

Not wanting to condemn so many new tracks to the status of B sides. I decided to divide all this music up rather like twins, so there would be two distinct releases, each with its own personality. So from an early point, Walk-in Diorama was compiled as a separate album.

The realisation that I had two related, yet different collections occurred to me on a ferry between Dieppe and Newhaven. A note in the pocket book I was carrying reads;

“Cool sunshine with soft sea spray persisting on a chilly westerly. So only a few have ventured up on deck, taking slow turns to look at the views from each quarter of the ship - this lends a strangely artificial feel. Rather as if we're moving through a giant exhibition space, or walk-in diorama.”

Of course the album isn’t about a trip on a ferry, but rather the sensation - whether it be caused accidentally or by design, that the space around you feels somehow contrived.
