The Studio Dog - a Border Collie, also known as Moss, was my constant friend and ‘studio assistant’ until he passed away in March 2021 at the grand old age of (about) 14. I say “about 14”, because Moss was a rescue dog who had crossed the Irish sea with the Border Collie Trust, to escape abuse that had left him both physically and psychologically damaged.

It took many months to gain his trust, but after a spell of runaways and literally running around the living room walls, he gradually began to venture beyond his hiding places - and then finally, after a long session of me laying motionless on my back in the garden, he found the courage to leave the shrubbery and lick my head!

From there he blossomed, investing the most unimaginable trust and love in his new family and life. This album is about him and that journey. A requiem I suppose, but one recorded in single takes during his final days - with him gently declining beside me. It was complied the morning after he passed away and I’ve left it entirely untouched thereafter, with no time fixes, quantization, or overdubs - save for the addition of a few pre-planned field recordings.
